What is best age to have my child photographed
We are often asked …… “what is the best age to have
my child photographed?" We have lots of favourite ages.
We love creating flattering, gorgeous, feminine pregnancy images.
You are only pregnant with this child once so enjoy capturing this incredible time in a special piece for your home. Recommended times are between 32-36 weeks, when you feel well rounded, full of energy and motherhood glow. We promise to make you look and feel gorgeous!
You are welcome to bring in older children and your partner if you can.
We have many wraps, fabrics and accessories to use in the shoot, you are more than welcome to bring along any items you would love to use and we will take the time to create something really beautiful for you to remember this amazing time.
The MOST important time in our opinion……our speciality!
Often called “The baby Whisperer”, countless times described as “patient beyond belief” so “artistic” so “gentle” and having the “touch”.
There is nothing else like newborn photography, those first couple of weeks are crucial to capture this precious time, preferably under 2 weeks, not longer than 4.
It can never be left to capture at a later stage, a baby grows, develops and changes so rapidly in the first year. Our WMG® package is a fantastic way of recording this.
The younger your newborn infant is, generally the more relaxed and sleepy they are which allows for more artistic poses. Newborns are usually photographed nude and asleep, we figure that for the rest of their lives they will be expected to interact with the camera, so for these few short weeks, allow them to sleep through it.. And yes they do often wee, poo and posit everywhere, (sometimes even on us) and that is fine with us. We are very used to doing a load of washing after each newborn shoot.
We like to allow up to three hours for the newborn shoots, so that there is plenty of time for babies to be fed and settled etc. We greatly appreciate the trust you have given us when you bring your newborn to us and often it is one of their first outings. We keep the session as low stress as possible and look after both you and your baby during the session. Bring along any special blankets or items you may wish to use, otherwise we have plenty here to choose from. Bring a change of clothing for yourself also just in case.
Lots of families like to order individually designed thank-you/announcement cards from our newborn sessions.
Around this age you are delighted by a smiley greeting, many babies start smiling well before this time but we find at 3 months they can be coaxed to smile rather than it being a random occurrence, and generally more so after a sleep and mornings.
Your baby has started to respond regularly to your voice, and your face, even though they are still very limited in positions they can hold, capturing these beautiful interactions between individual family members and child can be quite magical.
This age group has a fairly narrow window of opportunity before they are seeking feeds or sleep, so we work quickly and read the child’s behaviour to know when they have had enough. We know some positions and angles for this age group that are sure winners!

This is often the chubby, cute, smiley stage. Babies are keen to see what is going on around them and are starting to move in a whole myriad of ways, shuffling, crawling, commando….some are quite unique in their style of movement!
This age makes for some of our cutest sessions! We still photograph many babies of this age nude, perhaps with cute nappy covers on, you are welcome to bring any favourite items that you would like your baby to be photographed with and favourite outfits (keeping in mind they will not tolerate too many changes).
Our clients love our unique styles and both B&W and colour shots of this age, we have numerous props at the studio that work well for these ages if you wish to use them.
It is likely this kind of shoot will take around an hour, we do have to work fast as children have a limited attention span…fun, full of personality and efficient is our motto when photographing Kids!
First birthdays are a time of Celebration!
So much has happened over 12 months, they have grown from a very dependent, delicate infant to an energetic bundle of mischief and fun in such a short period of time.
Many children of this age are now standing and holding onto something sturdy, some are running!
You might love an outdoor session, our outdoor studio is ideal for this age with multiple backdrops and outdoor props. A 12 month old loves exploring outside, especially if they are comfortable standing holding on to something, or have already started walking.
If you prefer an indoor shoot, we find booking in a few days after your child first birthday party works really well as you can bring in any special birthday outfits, a few of the party props, such as balloons and many bring in a cupcake or cake to create havoc with. We will make this a real celebration of your little one’s first year.
Of course this session does not have to be Birthday themed at all, it can purely be them as they are, cute, natural and loved!
These shoots take around an hour. As with all our photo session we like to make it lots of fun!

15 months to 2 years – Are just an adorable age, you could eat them up they are so cute!! They love you to pieces, say or do the funniest things and are too delicious for words! This is a great stage to do either an outdoor shoot. Talk to us about any ideas you have prior to coming in so we can help out as much as possible.
Our outdoor studio has been designed with smaller children in mind. There is lots to explore, with gates, trees, a beach-box jetty and laneway. Having multiple backdrops, there is always a number to choose from with ideal lighting at the time.
We offer unique WMG™ album packages of images taken over your child early years, more information in our products list.

Tears and tantrums, fun and giggles…all in a space of minutes!
This is one of the most fun and can be the most challenging age to photograph.
One thing I know is they do not understand bribery or reasoning and will do what they want to do..unless…you can divert their attention and take their mind off what they were complaining about. We juggle, sing a funny song, act downright ridiculous at times to turn a headstrong 2 year old around.
Kids of this age need food…bring healthy snacks should they be required (please not lollies and treats, it often exacerbates behaviour) and be prepared to let your child lead this session.
This age group love the outdoors and some can find studio lights intimidating, take them outside and let them show their boisterous and cheeky personalities. If it is in the Studio we often incorporate a fun game to make them feel comfortable.
Feel free to bring a couple of different outfits.
Look for examples in our Childrens’ gallery.
Three- Four year olds are so much fun to photograph– they are often eager to please, can ask so many questions and want to help you, but haven’t yet become too self-conscious. Feel free to bring a couple of outfits, and discuss your ideas with us as three to four is a great age for dress-ups, and we do have some fun dress-ups here at the studio.
By five, kids have usually started school and are often becoming more self-conscious so we work towards getting a more natural response from them. You will see us being incredibly silly and you will often join us in laughter.
Bring anything that you would like to incorporate in the shoot. We find it can be fun to base the shoots around what the children are really into at this stage of their lives. eg, sport, dancing, musical instruments etc,

Tweens and Teens
Teens and in-betweens are at an age where they either think a photo shoot is going to be the most boring difficult thing they have ever endured (boys) or are so photo happy from endless “selfies” that they can’t wait to be in front of the camera (girls). The boys always leave greatly surprised that they actually enjoyed it and it wasn’t hard at all and the girls leave so excited and can’t wait to see the photos! Winners all round!
Encourage your teenagers to bring along several changes of clothing they love to wear! Add accessories, jackets, scarves, hats, makeup if desired, hair clips etc, gel, items they love such as instruments, sporting equipment if appropriate, headphones/music…whatever floats their boat!
If it is a family portrait, listen to what they want to wear and compromise to equal footing if need be..a teenager who is made to wear something they hate will not co-operate.
Sometimes bring along a few options and having our input works well, try to avoid bold patterns and distracting logos, B/W can reduce colour clashes, jackets can hide “the” top they insisted on.
Don’t stress too much, they will surprise you with how fantastic they can be in front of the camera.

One of the most cherished relationships is family, whether it be new parents with their baby, a brood of children, an older family or a group of extended family.
A family portrait is a beautiful way to celebrate all those special relationships. Thinking about what you will all wear and planning a little will result in portraits you will love all that little bit more! Nothing dates a photo more than fashion and bad haircuts! Keep it simple is our favourite motto, simple styles, simple lines, simple colour palettes and tones.
You do not have to match, but along a similar theme works the best. Dress as if you are going to the same place. Break it up a little with some variation, eg. all in jeans (denim has been around for years and always works well) lighter toned shirts (not t-shirts unless all very trim) add in a scarf or accessory on the central person or a couple of ladies to break up the lines, sleeves of some style are preferred as women always comment on their arms, armpits do not photograph well and bra straps always peek out of singlet tops. Another great option and usually very easy to put together in Melbourne is darker tones, simple, longer sleeved dark tones accentuate faces and are generally very flattering.
If unsure, discuss with us and you can always bring a few options for us to help select.
